The Story
Thyme Hotel
Daniel Miller, a husband, father, farmer, and Revolutionary War veteran, purchased 979.25 acres of forest along the Susquehanna River in 1790 with a dream of building a town. His original plans for the town’s layout are still reflected in Millersburg today, with land dedicated to churches, schools, banks, and hotels. In 1807, Daniel made the historic sale of his first 43 quarter-acre lots in Millersburg, each priced at $33. This marked the founding moment of Millersburg.
Since 1814, an inn or hotel has stood at the corner of Union & Market Streets in Millersburg, Pennsylvania, in accordance with our founder’s plan. The original building, known as the Lykens Valley Inn, was a gray stone structure. Despite passing through multiple owners and name changes, it has remained a place of hospitality. The present brick structure, constructed in 1888 with a major addition in 1898, stands as a testament to its enduring legacy.

Early 1900's painting of Thyme Hotel
In 1932, the hotel was renamed 'The Millersburger Hotel,' a name it retained throughout the ownership of the beloved May family. William and Yolande May, affectionately known as 'Bill and Yo,' purchased the hotel in spring 1970 and raised their four boys there: Phil, Donnie, Kevin, and Bryan. Yo was celebrated for her hospitality, generosity, and sense of humor, as well as her fairness and willingness to give anyone a chance. After her passing, Donnie and Kevin took over ownership and management. Donnie was an adoring husband, loving father, and hardworking individual. Kevin is especially known for his kindness and generosity; 'he would give you his last dime,' as one family member said, 'much like his mother Yo.' The entire family was renowned for their sincere work ethic and hospitality.
Following Donnie’s passing last year, the hotel came up for sale, and we, Chris and Anneliese, purchased this landmark, rich with memories, at the end of 2023.
